Sharmeen Obaid won an Oscar for her documentary “A Girl In the River: The Price of Forgiveness”. This documentary discussed the honour killings in Pakistan and described the story a girl who escaped an attempt of honour killing after her family threw her body into the river, thinking she has been killed, but she survived.
While some people praised Sharmeen for winning an Oscar, some people including some celebrities badly criticized Sharmeen for showing the dark side of Pakistan. Many people said that the West honoured Sharmeen Obaid for promoting a bad image of Pakistan, which is an old habit of Western nations!

“Sharmeen copied the idea of my film “Price of Honour”, which I made three years back. She made slight modifications to my film’s name “Price of Honour” by changing the word ‘honour’ to ‘forgiveness’. ”
The Pakistani film director further accused the Oscar winner of stealing the story of his film which was also about a weak woman who raised her voice against the rich who wanted to exploit women.
“I have no problem that Sharmeen was inspired by my film, but I’m upset for not giving me credit. I will not take any legal action against her, but I am unhappy.”

The Oscar winner told that she had no such intentions to spoil the image of Pakistan. “I wanted to highlight the issues so that there will be a law against them and also to cause awareness among people”.
